U.S. Embassy issues security alert ahead of IMN protests in Abuja, other cities

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory, warning of potential disruptions ahead of planned protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) on Friday, March 28, 2025.

The demonstrations are expected to take place in Abuja and other major cities.

The advisory cautions that the protests could lead to heavy traffic congestion, roadblocks, checkpoints, and possible confrontations between demonstrators and security forces.

While the IMN has not officially disclosed specific locations, past protests have been held at key sites in Abuja, including Bannex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, Eagle Square, and several mosques and public spaces.

The embassy has urged American citizens and the general public to take necessary precautions, such as avoiding protest areas, staying away from large gatherings, monitoring local news for updates, remaining vigilant, and ensuring their phones are charged while carrying proper identification.

Although demonstrations often begin peacefully, there is a risk of escalation, as seen in previous IMN protests that have sometimes turned violent.

The IMN, also known as the Shi’ite movement, has a history of staging demonstrations, often to demand the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, or to express dissatisfaction with government actions.

Some of these protests have resulted in clashes, casualties, and arrests.

Residents of Abuja and other affected cities are advised to remain cautious and plan their movements carefully to avoid any disruptions.
