Surging interest in foreign education: Top destinations for Nigerians

The pursuit of foreign education among Nigerians is increasing daily despite the significant costs involved. This trend has prompted many to explore alternative destinations due to restrictions from host countries and economic challenges.

New Delhi

New Delhi, India, is an attractive destination for Nigerian students seeking quality education and training. However, potential students should carefully consider the costs of studying and living in New Delhi before making a decision.

Germany

Germany remains a top choice for Nigerians due to its tuition-free education at public universities, where students only pay a nominal administrative fee of about N394,000. The cost of living ranges from $850 to $970 (N1.4 to N1.6 million) per month. Popular courses include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, Medicine, and Arts and Humanities.

Malaysia

Malaysia offers an affordable option with lower tuition fees and living costs. The average annual tuition fee for an undergraduate degree ranges from $180 to $480 (N296,460 to N790,560), and monthly living costs range from $440 to $780 (N724,680 to N1.3 million). Popular courses include Business and Management, Engineering, Information Technology, Medicine, and Social Sciences.

Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand are ideal for IT and finance enthusiasts. Australia offers a temporary graduate visa for post-graduation work, while New Zealand is more affordable. Both countries provide scholarships to attract international students.

Norway

Norway offers free education to all students, making it an appealing destination. However, the high cost of living, estimated at about N18.4 million annually, is a significant challenge. Norwegian universities are known for their high standards in education and research, particularly in marine studies and renewable energy. Popular courses include Engineering, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Business and Management, and Environmental Studies.

The US and UK

The United States and the United Kingdom remain major education destinations for Nigerians. According to Lakshmi Iyer, managing director at SI-Global India, state universities in the US offer master’s programs costing between $18,000 and $65,000 (N29.6 to N107 million) per academic year, and bachelor’s degrees between $15,000 and $50,000 (N24.7 to N82.3 million) per year. Ivy League universities, however, can cost double.

In the UK, many universities have seen increased admissions due to fewer student visa restrictions, flexible academic requirements, and lower tuition fees. A master’s degree in the UK costs between €7,000 and €12,000 (N12.5 million), with MBAs and specialized programs ranging from €15,000 to €25,000 (N26.8 to N44.7 million).
