The Philadelphia branch of the Black Students Union (BSU) has initiated a fundraising effort to support the family of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver who was fatally shot in Center City, Philadelphia.
Bolaji, described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, was killed on April 16, 2025, while waiting to pick up a passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Lounge.
He became an unintended victim when gunfire erupted between unidentified individuals who had just exited a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Bolaji was struck in the back of the head and crashed his car just a block away on Chestnut Street.
The suspects remain unidentified and no arrests have been made as of Monday.
In the wake of the tragedy, BSU President Alex Morris launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $25,000 to assist Bolaji’s family.
The appeal highlights Bolaji’s dedication to his work and community, describing his death as a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence.
As of now, the campaign has collected $1,712 from 19 donors.
According to Morris, the Bolaji family has had a long-standing connection with the BSU. The organization has stepped in to support Bolaji’s widow, Charice, and their children during this difficult time. The funds will be allocated toward funeral arrangements ($12,000), short-term living costs ($5,000), and grief counseling ($3,000). Any surplus donations will be placed in a trust for Bolaji’s grandchildren, including one who has not yet been born.
To ensure accountability, all contributions will be transferred directly to Charice Bolaji’s account. If that’s not possible, Morris has committed to personally delivering the funds with full documentation and transparency.
“Ola spent his days making sure others got home safely,” the campaign message reads.
“Now, it’s time for the community to stand with his family in their time of need. Whether it’s a small or large donation, every contribution makes a difference.”
