Senate committee moves to address “japa” syndrome, seeks solutions to curb mass exodus

The Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, chaired by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi), has expressed deep concern over the rising trend of Nigerians relocating abroad in search of better opportunities, commonly referred to as the “Japa” syndrome.

The committee is determined to find lasting solutions to this growing challenge, which has significant implications for the country’s economy and workforce.

Akpoti-Uduaghan stressed the importance of reversing the migration trend, particularly among the youth, by fostering patriotism and expanding opportunities within Nigeria. She revealed that the committee intends to partner with key stakeholders and draw lessons from countries such as India, Pakistan, and Egypt, which have successfully retained skilled professionals and boosted their economies.

As part of its strategy, the committee plans to develop a detailed database of Nigerians in the diaspora, categorized by country, and engage with international organizations to explore ways of encouraging their return. Akpoti-Uduaghan pointed to India’s success in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector as a model Nigeria could adopt to leverage its diaspora talent for national development.

Meanwhile, Senator Victor Umeh (APGA, Anambra), a former chairman of the committee, expressed confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s leadership, commending her competence and strategic approach in tackling the challenges associated with the “Japa” phenomenon.
