The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has officially inaugurated its newly elected 13-member national executive and launched The Migrant Magazine, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian community in the country.
The event, held under the theme “Uniting Nigerians in South Africa,” took place on Sunday at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg.
In his inaugural address, NUSA President Mr. Smart Nwobi, a lawyer, reiterated the union’s unwavering commitment to being the voice for Nigerians residing in South Africa.
“This administration is dedicated to fostering unity among our diverse Nigerian community in South Africa,” Nwobi stated, as communicated by Akindele Olunloyo, the Editor-in-Chief of The Migrant Magazine and National Publicity Secretary of NUSA. “We will prioritize supporting trade growth and commerce, while also strengthening ties between Nigerians and South Africans.”
Nwobi further explained that the launch of The Migrant Magazine was aimed at connecting the heritage of Nigerian migrants with their South African experiences, offering a platform for dialogue and community building. “It documents our migrant stories with dignity and authenticity,” he added.
Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), sent a goodwill message, highlighting the numerous opportunities for Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to national development in Nigeria. She was represented at the event by Dr. Sule Yakubu Bassi, the commission’s Secretary.
The event was attended by several distinguished dignitaries and community leaders, reflecting NUSA’s growing influence in South Africa’s socio-political sphere.
Founded in 2008, NUSA is a not-for-profit association representing the interests of Nigerians in South Africa. The union operates across all nine provinces and focuses on building a supportive and thriving community that promotes its members’ strengths.
The new leadership is poised to uphold NUSA’s legacy of offering legal support, advocacy, educational opportunities, and cultural promotion for Nigerians living in South Africa.
The inauguration marks a pivotal moment for NUSA as it continues to strengthen the unity within the Nigerian community and amplify the voices of Nigerian migrants in South Africa.
