Nigeria’s Troost-Ekong is AFCON 2024 Player of the Tournament, as host nation lifts cup

Nigeria’s captain, Willian Troost-Ekong, emerged as the star of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite his team, the Super Eagles, falling short in the final against hosts Ivory Coast.

Despite leading the tournament in goals scored by a defender (3) and anchoring a resolute defence, Troost-Ekong couldn’t prevent a 2-1 defeat.

Troost-Ekong powered home a header in the final, but goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastian Haller saw the Elephants lift the trophy.

The Super Eagles, reaching the final for the first time since 2013, had conceded just one goal before the final, underlining Troost-Ekong’s defensive influence.

Individual accolades were shared across the competition. South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, instrumental in their third-place finish, earned the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award. Emilo Nsue’s five goals for Equatorial Guinea secured the Golden Boot, while coach Emerse Fae guided Ivory Coast to glory and claimed the Coach of the Tournament title. South Africa were recognized for their fair play throughout the tournament.

The hosts enjoyed a rollercoaster journey, overcoming early challenges to stage a dramatic comeback in the final. Despite taking the lead, Nigeria struggled to hold onto possession and were ultimately overwhelmed by Ivory Coast’s attacking force.
