A distinguished Nigerian scholar, Professor Obijiofor Aginam, has been appointed Director of the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development. This specialized UN institute, located in New Delhi, India, plays a crucial role in promoting education for peace and sustainable development in developing countries.
Professor Aginam brings a wealth of experience to this leadership position. He has held senior positions within the United Nations system, including at the United Nations University (UNU). There, he served as Chief of International Cooperation and Development at the UNU-Institute for Sustainability and Peace, and later as Deputy-Director and Head of Governance for Global Health at the UNU-International Institute for Global Health.
His expertise extends beyond the UN. Professor Aginam previously held a tenured professorship at Carleton University in Canada, where he taught international law and global governance.
