Nigerians in the Philippines celebrate 64th independence anniversary

Nigerians in the Philippines recently celebrated Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in Pasay City, Metro Manila. The event, organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Philippines (NIDOPHIL), in partnership with the Nigerian Embassy, was held at the prestigious Vikings Restaurant, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.

Oloje Adeshina, Charge D’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, commended Nigerians living in the Philippines for being exemplary ambassadors of their country. He urged them to continue representing Nigeria positively and uphold its values abroad.

A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the new NIDOPHIL executives, led by Bishop Tony Marioghae. In his inaugural speech, Marioghae encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast and courageous in the face of challenges. He stressed the importance of unity, moral integrity, and a positive outlook in overcoming adversity.

Marioghae, who also serves as President of The Evangelical Ark Mission (TEAM International), one of the Philippines’ fastest-growing churches, pledged that his leadership would launch initiatives aimed at empowering Nigerians in the Philippines. He assured that the association would provide both moral and mental support while advocating for the protection of Nigerians’ rights under Philippine law.

Declaring a new era for the Nigerian community, Marioghae emphasized, “The days of intimidation and harassment are over. We are on a path to greatness, and no one will be left behind. We will address the concerns of the minority while fulfilling the aspirations of the majority.”

He also underlined the importance of earning respect through positive actions, saying, “Respect is not demanded, but earned. By engaging in constructive activities, we can change negative media narratives into success stories.”

Concluding his speech, Marioghae reminded the community of the weight of leadership, noting, “A crown does not make a king, but noble character and vision do. We must live together as brothers, or risk perishing together as fools.”

The event served as a celebration of culture, unity, and the commitment to progress for Nigerians in the Philippines.
