The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has revealed that Nigerians living abroad remit approximately $20 billion each year, accounting for 6.1% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of NIDCOM, shared this information during her presentation at the “Africa Diaspora Day on the Hill,” part of the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference held at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the significant achievements of Nigerians in the diaspora across various sectors, emphasizing their vital role as strategic partners in Nigeria’s development.
In a statement from Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, Dabiri-Erewa praised the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora not only to the Nigerian economy but also to their host countries.
The statement noted: “Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora to both the Nigerian economy and their host countries. She stated this during her presentation at the ‘Africa Diaspora Day on the Hill.’
“Nigerians continue to contribute significantly to the economy, with annual remittances totaling around $20 billion, which represents 6.1% of the nation’s GDP.”
Additionally, she discussed NIDCOM’s initiatives aimed at engaging the Nigerian diaspora through the National Diaspora Policy, designed to leverage the skills and resources of Nigerians abroad for national development.
