Over 150 Nigerians from across the globe gathered virtually on Sunday evening to discuss the challenges of living away from home.
The virtual summit, hosted on X’s spaces, highlighted extant cultural and socio-political realities in the different countries participants were resident.
Representatives from established communities like Nigerians in Germany (NiG), Nigerians in the US (NIUS), Nigerians in UK (NIUK), Nigerians in USA, Nigerians in the Middle East (NIME) and others, joined individuals from diverse countries, fostering a spirit of shared experience.
Loneliness emerged as a major concern, with one participant highlighting the difficulty of integrating into new communities while often feeling disconnected from home.
“Loneliness is the biggest problem,” they stated. “People stay in their own bubbles, working, saving, and isolating themselves. We need to be part of communities! Nobody succeeds alone.”
The summit underscored the importance of existing diaspora communities, offering support and connection for Nigerians abroad. It emphasized leveraging these established networks to access cultural guidance, mental health resources, and even migration advice.
They noted that by fostering collaboration and sharing experiences, Nigerians around the world can build stronger support systems, combat loneliness, and thrive in their adopted homes.
Discussions also explored successful integration strategies across various countries, equipping participants with “nuggets” for a more rewarding diaspora experience.
