Nigerian young star, Ethan Nwaneri, pens professional contract with Arsenal

English Premier League leaders Arsenal have announced the signing of highly-rated midfielder Ethan Nwaneri to his first professional contract.

The 17-year-old, born in England to Nigerian parents, has been with the Gunners since 2015, progressing through their academy system. A statement released by the club on Thursday confirmed the signing.

“Our England youth international joined us in May 2015 and has developed through our academy, being a vital player in all our age categories ever since,” the statement read.

Nwaneri has already made his mark on the senior team. He holds the record for the youngest player ever to appear in a Premier League match, achieved in September 2022 at the age of 15. He also made a substitute appearance in Arsenal’s 6-0 victory over West Ham United in February this year.

Academy Manager Per Mertesacker expressed his pride in Nwaneri’s development. “We are extremely proud of Ethan and his journey,” Mertesacker said. “From pre-academy to Hale End, then a seamless transition to Sobha Realty Training Centre and then making his first team debut. Ethan’s journey now continues, and we will all be there alongside him to support his development.”

Nwaneri’s technical skills and ability to dominate possession are seen as a perfect fit for Arsenal’s playing style. The club is clearly excited about his future potential. “He is someone that will thrive on and off the pitch as a Strong Young Gunner and we look forward to working with him during his ongoing development in the years to come,” Mertesacker concluded.
