Nigerian Govt appoints US broker to sell ageing presidential jets

The Nigerian government has enlisted the services of US-based broker JetHQ to facilitate the sale of three aging aircraft from the presidential fleet.

According to a report by The Cable, the aircraft to be sold include a Boeing 737 Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), designated as the president’s aircraft, along with a Gulfstream and a Falcon 7x.

JetHQ will evaluate and market these aircraft, with proceeds intended to contribute towards the purchase of newer replacements.

Earlier reports from PREMIUM TIMES highlighted recommendations by the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence for acquiring two new jets for the president and vice president, citing concerns over the age and maintenance costs of the current fleet.

The committee’s findings categorized several aircraft as unserviceable, notably the 19-year-old 737 BBJ currently under maintenance and the 23-year-old Gulfstream GV.

The proposal to acquire new planes has sparked public debate, with critics questioning the timing amidst Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the move, urging prioritization of economic hardship over luxury expenditures.

Conversely, proponents argue for enhanced safety measures following recent air incidents involving world leaders.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to the president, defended the decision, emphasizing safety concerns and the need for reliable transportation for the country’s leaders.

He pointed out the age of the current aircraft and referenced recent aviation tragedies to underscore the importance of ensuring adequate safety standards.
