Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal has tragically passed away after falling from the third floor of a shopping mall in Kampala, Uganda.
The 29-year-old striker, who played for Ugandan Premier League club Vipers SC, reportedly fell from Voicemall Shopping Arcade early Monday morning.
According to Ugandan police, Lawal had been visiting a Tanzanian friend who lived in one of the residential apartments within the mall. The friend told authorities she had left him alone shortly before the incident.
“Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting thorough investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police stated.
Vipers SC confirmed his passing in an emotional statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Lawal joined Vipers SC in July 2022 after spending two seasons with Rwandan club AS Kigali. His death has left the football community in shock as investigations continue into the circumstances of the tragedy.
