Nigerian female founders lead the Aurora Tech award nominations

Nigerian female entrepreneurs are making waves at the Aurora Tech Awards, an annual recognition that celebrates the most ambitious and pioneering female founders in emerging markets.

Out of 2,018 applicants from 116 countries, Nigeria stands out with 21 female founders named to the Top 120 Founders for 2025. This impressive representation reinforces Nigeria’s position as a major hub for innovation and female entrepreneurship. Brazil and the United States follow closely behind, with Egypt also making notable contributions. Other countries such as Colombia, Kenya, the United Kingdom, India, and Kazakhstan reflect the global reach and impact of the award.

The 2025 Aurora Tech Award shines a spotlight on Nigeria’s growing influence in the tech and startup sectors, underscoring the remarkable achievements of its female founders and inspiring women across Africa and the globe.

“These founders are set to shape the future of their industries and countries, making them some of the most promising figures to watch in 2025,” said Isabella Ghassemi-Smith, Head of the Aurora Tech Awards.

Women’s involvement in entrepreneurship has been steadily rising. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), women’s startup activity rates increased from 6.1% (2001-2005) to 10.4% (2021-2023) across 30 countries.

Additionally, a report by Research WE-FI revealed that 17% of working-age women in developing economies are already entrepreneurs, with 35% aspiring to join them. In 2023, emerging economies captured 17% of global venture capital investment, highlighting their resilience and potential.

The Aurora Tech Award not only recognizes these remarkable founders but also provides them with access to crucial resources and opportunities to scale their businesses. Award applicants receive mentorship, fundraising support, pitch guidance, and access to valuable networks, including investors, VC funds, and PR channels, all aimed at helping them succeed.

The four primary sectors dominating this year’s nominations include Healthtech, Agrotech, Edtech, and e-commerce. The top finalists will be announced in February 2025, with the winners celebrated at a global ceremony later in the year.
