The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom has paid tribute to the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Abigail Katung, as part of the Black History Month celebrations.
Katung was acknowledged by the community for her efforts in supporting Nigerians living in the UK.
The community commended her for being a strong advocate for Nigerians and for creating opportunities that increase visibility and involvement.
In their statement, they noted, “Abigail’s appointment is a historic milestone, serving as a symbol of hope and representation for Nigerians and the broader African diaspora in leadership positions.”
They further highlighted that her role as Lord Mayor underscores her commitment to public service, promoting inclusivity, and improving the welfare of all Leeds residents.
Abigail Katung was appointed the 130th Lord Mayor of Leeds in May 2024, becoming the first individual of African heritage to assume the role.
In addition to Katung, other Nigerians in the UK were also recognized for their contributions, including Toyyib Adelodun, Bukola Olubuse, Ibironke Quadri, and Ndukwe Onuoha.
Regarding Adelodun, the community wrote, “Toyyib’s dedication to education and personal growth has had a significant impact. His efforts inspire empowerment within the community, encouraging people to pursue their potential with confidence and determination.”
Of Olubuse, they remarked, “We honor Bukola Omo Oba Olubuse, a passionate project director, coach, and trainer, for her advocacy in preserving the cultural heritage of the Nigerian community in the UK.”
Black History Month, originally a week-long observance, was expanded to a month in 1970 and honors significant figures and events in African diaspora history. While the U.S. and Canada celebrate it in February, the UK and Ireland observe it in October.
