Nigeria-US bilateral relations at risk —Lawmaker

U.S. Representative James Hill (R-AR) has raised concerns that the ongoing detention of Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan in Nigeria could strain diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Hill expressed surprise that Nigeria, a country considered a friend of the United States, is holding an American citizen on charges he is not directly involved in. Hill urged President Biden to intensify efforts to secure Gambaryan’s release.

As Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and Chairman of the subcommittee on digital assets and financial technology, Hill emphasized Gambaryan’s significant role in combating cybercrime, noting his contributions to dismantling numerous cybercrime networks. Hill asserted that it is time for the U.S. to reciprocate this assistance.

Hill’s remarks come amid growing attention to Gambaryan’s case and mounting calls for his swift release. His recent engagement with U.S. Under Secretary for Management John Bass highlights increasing concern among U.S. officials.

In a video interview shared on his X account, Hill questioned Bass about the delay in Gambaryan’s release, despite recent U.S.-Nigeria collaborations on religious freedom and commercial partnerships. Hill criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of the situation, calling it “embarrassing” and urging for more robust intervention from President Biden. He highlighted Gambaryan’s deteriorating health and underscored the need for urgent action.

Bass responded by acknowledging the complexities within the Nigerian system but assured that efforts are underway to resolve the issue. He expressed hope for a resolution in the near future, emphasizing that the U.S. government is committed to securing Gambaryan’s release.

Hill and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) previously advocated for Gambaryan’s humanitarian release in June, citing his poor prison conditions and health. The lawmakers have called on the U.S. embassy to push for Gambaryan’s release, stressing his innocence and the harsh conditions of his detention.

Gambaryan has been held for six months on charges related to tax evasion and other financial crimes. His wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has persistently demanded his release, questioning why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) continues to prosecute him when the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) has cleared him of any tax-related charges.
