Nigeria issues travel warning to citizens amid rising Islamophobia, Antisemitism in Australia

The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory, urging its citizens to reconsider visiting Australia due to a rise in Islamophobia and antisemitism.

The move comes in response to Australia’s own travel warning that reflects growing reports of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse directed at foreigners.

Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Acting Spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that the advisory was issued following a recent surge in hate crimes, particularly antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents.

While Australia has long been recognized for its multicultural society, recent developments in certain regions have raised alarms.

The advisory was also issued in light of a disturbing incident in Woollahra, a suburb of Sydney, where a car was set ablaze, and anti-Israel graffiti was scrawled on nearby buildings.

“This event is part of a broader increase in both antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Australia, coinciding with international conflicts and tensions.”

“Nigerians are therefore advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort.

“To this end, extra vigilance and necessary precautions are strongly recommended.

“Nigerian travellers and residents of Australia who experience or witness any form of racist attack or harassment should contact the High Commission of Nigeria at 26 Guilfoyle St, Yarralumla ACT 2600, Canberra, Australia. Phone: +61262158500. Email: chancery@nigeria-can.org.au,” Ebienfa added.

The advisory follows Australia’s own warning, which recently urged its citizens to reassess travel to Nigeria due to security risks such as terrorism, kidnapping, and the potential for civil unrest.
