NiDCOM reveals date for return of teenage girls trafficked to Ghana

The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has confirmed the safety of the teenage girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution, stating that they are currently in custody and will be returning to Nigeria next week.

Dabiri-Erewa made this announcement during an interview on TVC last Saturday

The rescue comes after reports emerged that over 10 Nigerian teenage girls were trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. The girls, all below the age of 18, were enticed from Nigeria to Ghana by an unnamed individual, who has since been apprehended by Ghanaian authorities.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, the girls were rescued by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), a group representing Nigerians living in Ghana.

A video capturing the girls after their rescue went viral, with a NIDO official heard expressing relief at freeing the innocent Nigerian children from exploitation.

“They are helpless. They picked them and send them to do prostitution and they would be collecting money from these innocent children.

“These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution . We thank Chief Callistus, Chairman, Nido Ghana for ensuring the arrest of the evil perpetrator. I am sure ⁦@naptipnigeria⁩ will follow up,Very , very heartbreaking.”

The NIDCOM boss, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), described the development as heartbreaking and asked the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to take over the matter.

“These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution,” she quoted a viral video showing the girls. “We thank Chief Callistus, Chairman, NIDO Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the evil perpetrator. I am sure NAPTIP⁩ will follow up, very heartbreaking.”
