The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has applauded Tunde Onakoya for setting a new world record in chess.
Onakoya, a renowned Nigerian chess champion and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, has officially been recognized by the Guinness World Records for completing the longest chess marathon ever recorded.
According to the Guinness World Records, Onakoya achieved the incredible milestone after playing non-stop for 64 hours alongside American chess player, Shawn Martinez, at Times Square in New York City from April 17 to April 20, 2025.
This latest feat comes after a previous attempt by Onakoya in April 2024, where he played for 60 hours, briefly holding the record before it was overtaken by Norwegian players Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn, who clocked 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds.
With his verified 64-hour performance, Onakoya now holds the official global title for the longest chess marathon.
Dabiri-Erewa praised Onakoya’s persistence, intelligence, and commitment to making a difference, especially through his advocacy for disadvantaged children via his Chess in Slums initiative.
“Tunde Onakoya exemplifies the resilient and visionary Nigerian spirit. His accomplishment is not only a personal triumph but also a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa. He has brought honor to the nation once again,” she stated.
She further reiterated NiDCOM’s continued support for Nigerians abroad who are breaking new ground and urged young people to take inspiration from Onakoya’s journey of purpose and impact.
