NiDCOM, Ahmed Musa demand investigation into Nigerian footballer’s death in Uganda

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and Super Eagles star Ahmed Musa have called for a thorough investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in Uganda.

Lawal, a Sokoto-born player who played for Vipers SC in the Ugandan league, was reported dead on Monday, with Ugandan authorities initially stating that he had died from an accident.

However, later reports suggested he fell from a balcony, raising suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has described the incident as “suspicious” and demanded transparency in the investigation.

“This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all. This is so sad!” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “NiDCOM will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul rest in peace, and may God give the family the strength to bear this loss.”

Ahmed Musa also expressed concerns over conflicting reports regarding Lawal’s death, urging both Nigerian and Ugandan authorities to seek justice for the late footballer.

“The news of Abubakar Lawal’s death was shocking. Initially, reports claimed it was an accident, but later, it was said he fell from a balcony,” Musa stated. “The contradicting reports raise suspicions, and I have been in contact with the Nigerian authorities and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to demand a proper investigation.”

The 29-year-old footballer was reportedly visiting a Tanzanian friend who resided in one of the apartments within the shopping mall. According to the Ugandan police, the friend claimed she had left him alone shortly before the incident occurred.

Authorities in Uganda have confirmed that CCTV footage is being reviewed and interrogations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.
