Mother sends son to Nigerian boarding school after U.S. Homeschooling, says experience will be life-ahaping

A woman who previously homeschooled her son in the United States has sparked conversations online after enrolling him in a boarding school in Nigeria—a move she believes will positively shape his future.

In a TikTok video shared by @themomtrotter, the mother revealed that her son had been homeschooled his entire life and had traveled to more than 65 countries. But she felt it was time for him to gain a new perspective through a traditional school environment in Nigeria.

“After homeschooling my son his whole life and travelling to over 65 countries together, saying he’s now in boarding school in Nigeria definitely catches people off guard,” she wrote.

She went on to explain that her decision was inspired by her own upbringing.

“I went to boarding school at 9, and so did my mom. If you grew up in Cameroon like I did, then you know it’s normal. By Form 1 or Year 7, my friends and I were heading off to boarding school. That experience shaped me, and I wanted my son to have that too.”

In the video, the boy, whose name was not disclosed, is seen arriving at his new school in Nigeria, luggage in hand.

Despite the dramatic shift from homeschooling in the U.S. to boarding school in Africa, he reportedly adapted quickly and has already formed close friendships.

“He is very outgoing and adjusts to new places like it’s second nature, so boarding school hasn’t been a big change for him. He already has lots of friends, and it feels like he’s been there for years!” she said.

The only adjustment he struggled with was the length of the school day.

“His only complaint that first week was how long he had to sit in class. Since we typically homeschool for about three hours a day, that was something he had to get used to.”

The story has resonated with many, shedding light on the value of blending global exposure with African educational traditions.
