Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) recently announced the appointment of Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE as its new Chancellor. Dr. Imafidon, a leading figure in the UK’s tech sector and advocate for diversity in STEM fields, succeeds Dr. Annie Lennox OBE who stepped down in 2023.
As GCU’s Chancellor, Dr. Imafidon will perform ceremonial duties, including awarding degrees to graduating students. More importantly, she will champion the university’s ambitions and vision, providing guidance and support as it strives towards its goals.
Dr. Imafidon, recognized for her societal contributions, is a true trailblazer in business, mathematics, and technology. Her exceptional journey boasts numerous accolades, including being named Young IT Professional of the Year in 2013 by the UK IT Industry and British Computer Society, and receiving an MBE in 2017 for her services to young women and STEM sectors.
Beyond her personal achievements, Dr. Imafidon has significantly impacted the future of STEM through her co-founding of Stemettes, an award-winning organization inspiring young women to pursue careers in STEM. Stemettes has reached over 60,000 young individuals across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, fostering a more diverse and inclusive future for the field.
Dr. Imafidon’s dedication extends beyond inspiring the next generation. As a sought-after speaker and advocate, she continues to champion the advancement of women in technology. This commitment was recognized in 2020 when she was named the UK’s most influential woman in Tech.
An honorary graduate of GCU, Dr. Imafidon’s remarkable academic journey includes passing GCSEs at just 10 years old, becoming the youngest girl in the UK to pass A-level computing at 11, and obtaining a Master’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oxford at the age of 20. Her impressive accomplishments serve as a testament to her dedication and embody the university’s core values of confidence, creativity, integrity, and responsibility.
Dr. Imafidon’s official installation ceremony will take place during a university graduation ceremony in July. Her appointment marks an exciting chapter for GCU as it continues to promote education, celebrate diversity, and inspire future generations.
