London to host economic summit on Nigeria’s creative industry in May

The 14th Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, is set to lead discussions at an upcoming economic summit in London, focusing on Nigeria’s creative creative industry in Nigeria. The event, organized by the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, will be held at the Pullman Hotel in May 2024.

Joining Sanusi on the panel are prominent figures including Segun Awolowo, former executive secretary of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, and Abike Dabiri, chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). Industry experts such as Jammie Simmons of Access Bank UK, Bimbo Olashore, Koyinsola Ajayi, and Kola Adesina will also participate in the discussions.

The summit, themed “The Pivotal Role of the Creative Industry in Driving Our Emerging Economic Renaissance,” aims to explore the significant contributions of the sector, currently valued at over N3 trillion. Discussions will delve into establishing robust frameworks to harness these benefits effectively, focusing on areas like revenue generation, job creation, infrastructure development, and tourism.

Beyond high-level talks, the event will feature a unique trade expo showcasing Nigerian and Afro-focused businesses. This platform will allow businesses to exhibit their goods and services, fostering connections and potential collaborations.

“The vision is to establish an annual gathering that fosters dialogue on how the creative industry can continue to play a central role in Nigeria’s economic renaissance,” said Joseph Edgar, chairman of the Duke of Shomolu Foundation. He emphasized the opportunity for networking and forging alliances between key stakeholders within the industry.

Itohan Barlow will manage the summit on behalf of the Shomolu Foundation. “This promises to be a landmark event driving the discourse on the transformative power of the creative industry,” Edgar added.

“We expect a large turnout, with tickets already selling well. Investors, economists, and even theatregoers are eager to be part of this important event,” he concluded.
