Libya’s Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) in the Southern Region has facilitated the repatriation of 166 Nigerian migrants back to Nigeria through a voluntary repatriation initiative.
This operation, conducted from Sabha International Airport, was supported by the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Migrant Rescue Watch disclosed on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday that the DCIM, with support from IOM, coordinated the repatriation of the Nigerian nationals.
This development comes amid reports of other Nigerians stranded in Libya. Recently, a Nigerian woman, identified only as Omowunmi, shared a plea for help, requesting immediate assistance to return to Nigeria.
In a video posted on Facebook, Omowunmi, who hails from Ondo State, stated that she is battling a severe ulcer and is struggling to survive after her guardian allegedly abandoned her in Libya.
Omowunmi recounted that her health deteriorated significantly due to her illness, which has left her unable to eat properly. She claimed her guardian had taken her money and left her without support on the streets of Libya. “My name is Omowunmi from Ondo State. I am very sick and I need to come back to Nigeria. I need the help of Nigerians. Please have mercy on me. I want to go back to Nigeria. Don’t let me die in Libya,” she appealed.
She further explained that her guardian took her SIM card, making it impossible to contact her family, and has refused to assist her in registering with the Nigerian embassy. “I have spent all my money. Please, don’t let me die in Libya. I was not like this when I arrived in Libya. But I have suffered,” she said.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, advised Omowunmi to reach out to the Nigerian embassy in Libya for immediate assistance.
