Libya: 28 migrants found dead, 76 rescued from torture camp

Libyan authorities have uncovered the bodies of 28 migrants near a detention center in the southern desert region of the country.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Libyan Attorney General’s Office, the mass grave was found north of Kufra, a city where dozens of migrants had been held captive. Security forces managed to rescue 76 migrants from the facility.

Officials believe a criminal gang was responsible for detaining the migrants, subjecting them to torture, and inflicting inhumane and degrading treatment.

Kufra, located near Libya’s borders with Egypt and Sudan, is known as a hotspot for human trafficking. The country remains unstable due to years of civil war, allowing armed groups—some with ties to state agencies—to exploit migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers through illegal smuggling networks.

Reports continue to emerge of serious human rights abuses, including forced labor, human trafficking for sexual exploitation, unlawful killings, and coerced recruitment by armed groups.
