Key updates on UK skilled worker Visa extension regulations for 2024

The UK government has introduced significant updates to the Skilled Worker Visa regulations for 2024, impacting both new applicants and current visa holders.

These changes are designed to ensure that international workers meet updated standards aligned with the UK’s evolving job market.

The Skilled Worker Visa enables foreign workers with specific skills to be employed by licensed UK companies, replacing the former Level 2 visa and applying to roles at RQF Level 3 or higher, comparable to A-level qualifications in the UK.

Increased Salary Requirements

One of the most notable changes in 2024 is the revised minimum salary threshold:

•New applicants now need a minimum annual salary of £38,700, reflecting a 48% increase from the previous requirement of £26,200.

•Existing visa holders seeking extensions can still qualify with an annual salary of £29,000, offering more flexibility for those already in the UK workforce.

These changes aim to ensure skilled workers are compensated fairly, with wages that align with those of local employees.

Updated Occupation Code Standards

Alongside salary adjustments, the government has updated salary benchmarks for various occupation codes:

•New applicants must meet the 50th percentile salary for their respective job roles.

•Current visa holders can apply for extensions based on the previous 25th percentile wage rates.

This revision allows existing visa holders some leeway, while new applicants will face stricter wage criteria.

Expanded Options for Supplementary Work

The regulations now allow skilled worker visa holders to take on additional jobs outside their primary roles, offering greater flexibility. Previously, supplementary work was restricted to part-time roles within the same occupation code. The Home Office emphasized that this expansion will help skilled workers broaden their professional experience and increase their income potential.

“This will empower skilled workers to enhance both their skills and financial stability,” a Home Office representative noted.

Application Process and Requirements

To qualify for the Skilled Worker Visa, applicants must meet specific requirements, including:

•A job offer from a licensed UK employer, a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, and proof of English proficiency.

•Documentation such as identification, proof of finances, and, where relevant, relationship certificates for dependents.

•Visa extensions require an online application, fee payment, and submission of necessary documents, with an average processing time of eight weeks. Expedited processing is available for an additional fee.

The 2024 Skilled Worker Visa updates reflect the UK government’s commitment to balanced immigration management and a skilled workforce. Staying informed about these new standards is essential for both new and current visa holders to ensure compliance and a smooth application process.
