The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCom) announced on Tuesday that it has rescued two Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Ghana for prostitution.
This follows the rescue of 11 Nigerian girls from a similar situation in Ghana just a week earlier.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDCom Chairman and CEO, revealed the news in a statement by the commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
According to Dabiri-Erewa, the girls were rescued on Monday.
The rescue operation was facilitated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, led by Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Calistus. The rescued girls are currently in safe custody.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the need for concerted efforts to combat human trafficking, describing it as a form of modern-day slavery.
She noted that the rescued girls are providing valuable information to help track down their traffickers.
Plans are underway to repatriate the girls to Nigeria, where they will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
One of the rescued girls is from Edo State and the other from Lagos, though both reside in Lagos.
It would be recalled that 11 girls, aged between 15 and 16 years, from Imo and Plateau states were trafficked to Ghana under the pretense of working as sales girls but were instead forced into prostitution. These girls were rescued and returned to Nigeria a week ago.
