Japa: Stay connected to home, NiDCOM Boss urges Nigerians abroad

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has urged Nigerians migrating abroad to remain connected to their homeland and contribute to its development.

Speaking at a Ramadan Lecture organized by No Dull Moment in Islam, themed “The Intricacies of Japa Syndrome”, Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged that migration is a fundamental human right and a global reality.

However, she emphasized the need for Nigerians abroad to make their migration purposeful by maintaining strong ties with their country rather than severing connections.

She referenced the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah for a better life, highlighting that he eventually returned to rebuild his homeland.

According to her, the focus should not be on discouraging migration but on ensuring that Nigerians abroad stay engaged and contribute positively to national development.

Dabiri-Erewa also praised the achievements of Nigerians in the diaspora, noting that 70 percent of Black doctors in the diaspora are Nigerians, alongside many others excelling in technology, business, sports, and entertainment.

She cited the recent homecoming of Morotoluwa Ojomoh, a Nigerian who won the Super Bowl Championship, as an example of how Nigerians abroad can maintain strong ties with their roots.
