Japa: Greece faces urgent need for 300,000 foreign workers to boost economic growth

Greece is grappling with a severe labor shortage, requiring over 300,000 foreign workers to sustain its expanding economy.

Key sectors, including hospitality, construction, and manufacturing, are struggling to meet demand due to a lack of manpower, according to TravelBiz.

The labor shortfall spans industries such as tourism and IT, underscoring the need for both skilled and unskilled workers. This deficit is straining businesses and slowing economic growth across vital sectors.

High Demand in Critical Sectors

Greece’s tourism sector, a cornerstone of its economy, is one of the most affected:

•Roles such as chefs, housekeepers, and waitstaff are in high demand to support the industry.

•Construction also faces shortages, with skilled workers like electricians and plumbers urgently needed to complete infrastructure projects.

•Manufacturing and industrial positions, including machine operators and welders, are essential to meet domestic and export demands.

•In the IT sector, roles for software engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and support staff remain vacant, further complicating the labor crisis.

Immigration Reforms to Address Shortages

In response, Greece has introduced policy changes to attract foreign workers. Adjustments to the EU Blue Card program aim to draw highly skilled professionals, particularly in IT and engineering.

Foreign workers with short-stay visas or from countries with visa-free entry can now more easily apply for Greek employment opportunities. However, processing delays of up to nine months remain a challenge, particularly for businesses needing seasonal labor.

Rising Global Interest in Greek Jobs

The CEO of WorkInGreece, a platform linking employers to international workers, revealed that over 2,000 Greek businesses are actively seeking foreign talent. The platform has seen a surge in applications from workers eager to fill positions in tourism, construction, and IT, driven by streamlined visa processes and Greece’s growing job market.

Visa Options for Foreign Workers

There are several pathways for those interested in working in Greece:

•EU Blue Card: Designed for highly skilled workers in IT and engineering, requiring a job offer, specific salary thresholds, and relevant qualifications.

•National Visa (D Visa): Open to both skilled and unskilled workers, valid for up to one year and renewable for long-term employment.

•Seasonal Work Visa: Ideal for short-term roles in agriculture, tourism, and hospitality, this visa is valid for up to six months.

These visa options are crucial to addressing Greece’s labor shortages, allowing foreign workers to support the country’s economic recovery and growth.
