Usra Hendra Harahap, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, is being investigated following allegations of sexual harassment made by a former staff member of the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja.
According to the Jakarta Globe, the allegations, detailed in a petition by the victim’s legal team, claim the incident occurred on February 7 during official duties.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, described the encounter as deeply traumatic and has since returned to Jakarta to seek counseling and support. A psychological evaluation by Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry reportedly diagnosed her with severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.
The victim further alleged retaliation, including unjustified termination and undue scrutiny in her role at the embassy. Her legal team has called for an independent investigation, reinstatement of her position, and compensation for damages.
Roy Soemirat, spokesperson for Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Ministry is treating the allegations with seriousness.
“We are thoroughly examining the reports, ensuring that the investigation follows all legal guidelines,” Soemirat stated on Wednesday.
The Ministry has also provided psychological support to the victim and reiterated its commitment to tackling sexual violence within its diplomatic missions.
