Meanwhile, the First Lady of Nigeria has cautioned the country’s women against losing their cultural identity. This statement followed Meghan Markle’s visit, during which the First Lady also criticized the “nakedness” of some US celebrities.
Speaking at an event in Abuja to commemorate the first year of her husband’s administration, President Bola Tinubu’s wife urged teenagers and young people to dress modestly and avoid imitating American film stars.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, affectionately called ‘mummy’ by some Nigerians, remarked, “We need to save our children. Look at the way they dress. This isn’t the Met Gala. Nakedness is rampant while men remain fully clothed. We must address this and let them know that such nakedness is unacceptable in our culture. It is not beautiful.”
Although the First Lady mentioned Meghan Markle, she did not criticize the Duchess, who recently visited Nigeria, referring to it as “my country” and revealed she is 43% Nigerian.
In her message following Harry and Meghan’s cultural visit to promote the Invictus Games, Senator Tinubu emphasized, “Our women should not mimic or try to emulate American film stars.”
