IELTS Fees soar in Nigeria: Second Price Hike in 2024

The British Council in Nigeria has sparked concerns among test-takers by announcing a second increase in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) fees this year. This comes into effect on March 1st, 2024.

The Council attributes the price hike to “prevailing market dynamics and increased costs in the delivery of our exams,” citing the ongoing fluctuations in the Nigerian Naira exchange rate against other currencies.

The new fees represent a significant jump from January’s adjustment. Applicants taking the computer-based academic and general training modules will now face a cost of N266,000, while those opting for the paper-based version will pay N256,500. UK visa and immigration (UKVI) applicants will face an even steeper increase, with fees reaching N285,500. The IELTS Life Skills exam has also risen to N249,000.

This latest hike has drawn criticism from some Nigerians, who argue it creates further barriers for those seeking to study or work abroad. Many already face financial constraints, and these increased costs could limit their access to educational and career opportunities requiring an IELTS test.
