Adedotun Owolabi (PhD) is the Director of Education For All Initiative, a Community Interest Company registered in the United Kingdom and driven by the objective to see individuals, regardless of socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, or location, have equal opportunities to access STEM education of high quality. To achieve this, he repurposes underutilized laboratory equipment from universities and institutions abroad and donating them to schools in Africa. In this interview, Adedotun discussed in fine detail the ideology that underpin EFAI’s undertakings, highlighting the importance of the resilience of ‘Nigerianness’ to doing exploits beyond the shores of homeland.
Excerpts:
How did EFAI happen? Please walk us through the initiative’s birth story
The birth of the Education for All Initiative (EFAI) stems from a deeply personal journey rooted in my experiences studying in Nigerian schools, from primary education to my final academic pursuits in Nigeria. Throughout my educational journey, I encountered significant limitations in access to laboratory and computer infrastructures that could have enriched my understanding of my chosen field of study. In Nigerian schools, we were trained on how to use basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) equipment, but advanced equipment essential for comprehensive learning experiences was largely inaccessible. I vividly remember instances during my tertiary education where over 20 students were allocated to a single tripod stand for Chemistry practical equipment, severely constraining our learning opportunities. The stark contrast between the limited resources available in Nigerian schools and the abundance of laboratory equipment in universities and tertiary institutions abroad became painfully apparent to me. During my doctoral studies, a former colleague, who was also pursuing her PhD, graciously showed me around the well-equipped laboratory where she conducted her research. Witnessing the vast array of modern equipment and resources available to her, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of inadequacy and frustration at the stark disparity in educational opportunities. Reflecting on my own experiences and recognizing the dire need for improved access to quality education resources in Nigeria and across Africa, the idea for EFAI began to take shape. It became clear to me that many schools in Africa, particularly those in underserved communities, lacked the necessary infrastructure and resources to provide students with a holistic STEM education. This realization fueled my determination to bridge the gap and provide students with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive academically. EFAI’s mission is rooted in addressing the critical shortage of well-equipped science laboratories in African schools. With approximately 90% of schools lacking adequate laboratory facilities and the high cost of setting up fully equipped labs being prohibitive for most communities, there is an urgent need for intervention. Moreover, the United Nations’ Africa Renewal Magazine (October 2017) highlights the imperative for Africa to significantly increase its workforce in the fields of science and engineering for sustainable growth and development. EFAI aims to address these challenges by repurposing surplus and underutilized laboratory equipment from universities and institutions abroad and donating them to schools in Africa. By leveraging resources that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing them to communities in need, EFAI seeks to level the playing field and provide students with the resources necessary for a quality STEM education. In essence, EFAI was born out of a deep-seated commitment to equity, access, and opportunity in education. Through collaborative efforts and a shared vision for a brighter future, we aspire to empower students across Africa with the tools they need to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of their communities and beyond.
What ideology undergird the intervention of EFAI and where does the initiative stand in the overall framework of the SDGs?
The intervention of the Education for All Initiative (EFAI) is primarily underpinned by the ideology of universal access to quality STEM education. EFAI aims to ensure that all individuals, regardless of socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, or location, have equal opportunities to access STEM education of high quality. This ideology is rooted in the belief that education is a fundamental human right and a key driver of social and economic development. The Education for All Initiative aligns closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education. Goal 4 of the SDGs emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education for all, aiming to ensure that by 2030, all girls and boys complete free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education. EFAI’s efforts contribute directly to the achievement of this goal by striving to provide education that is not only accessible but also of high quality. Furthermore, EFAI’s intervention intersects with other SDGs beyond Goal 4. Education is recognized as a cross-cutting issue that impacts various aspects of sustainable development, including poverty reduction (Goal 1), gender equality (Goal 5), decent work and economic growth (Goal 8), reduced inequalities (Goal 10), and building sustainable communities (Goal 11), among others. By promoting universal access to quality education, EFAI plays a crucial role in advancing progress across multiple SDGs and fostering holistic development within communities and societies.
While you’ve mentioned what EFAI contributes to the beneficiary country(ies), does the initiative bring anything to the table for the United Kingdom and other countries where you source materials from?
Certainly, the Education for All Initiative (EFAI) can bring several benefits to the United Kingdom and other countries where materials are sourced. One notable benefit is the repurposing and donation of surplus and underutilized scientific equipment to African schools. This initiative not only supports education in beneficiary countries but also leads to tangible benefits for sourcing countries, such as the United Kingdom. Specifically, the repurposing and donation of surplus scientific equipment contribute to a reduction in electronic waste for the United Kingdom. Instead of disposing of these materials, which can contribute to environmental pollution and resource depletion, they are diverted from disposal and repurposed for educational use in African schools. This reduction in electronic waste can be quantified by measuring the volume and types of electronic equipment diverted from disposal and repurposed for educational use. By repurposing surplus equipment for educational purposes, the United Kingdom contributes to sustainable development goals by minimizing its environmental footprint and promoting responsible consumption and production practices. Additionally, this initiative may lead to positive outcomes such as enhanced reputation, strengthened international relations, and increased collaboration with African countries in education and research sectors. Overall, the repurposing and donation of surplus scientific equipment through EFAI benefit both beneficiary countries and sourcing countries like the United Kingdom by promoting sustainability and advancing global education efforts.
What’s happening now with EFAI?
Currently, there are exciting developments underway with the Education for All Initiative (EFAI). Firstly, I am thrilled to announce that EFAI is now officially registered to operate in the United Kingdom. This significant milestone opens up new opportunities for collaboration, outreach, and impact both within the UK and globally. Furthermore, EFAI is currently engaged in collaborative discussions with the University of Chester. These discussions represent a promising partnership that could lead to joint initiatives, research projects, or educational programs aimed at advancing the goals of EFAI. Collaborating with reputable academic institutions like the University of Chester strengthens EFAI’s capacity to deliver high-quality education initiatives and make a meaningful difference in communities around the world. Looking ahead, EFAI is eager to expand its network and partnerships further. We are actively seeking to work with many other organizations that share our vision and commitment to providing education for all. By fostering collaborations with diverse stakeholders, including NGOs, educational institutions, government agencies, and grassroots organizations, we aim to amplify our impact and bring the EFAI dream to life on a larger scale.
