From hope to hardship: Nigerians in Canada reveal struggles with homelessness

Two Nigerians, Simi and Peter, have shared their experiences as immigrants in Canada, revealing the difficulties that led to their struggles with homelessness.

In a video shared on social media on Monday, both recounted how their dreams of a brighter future turned into unexpected challenges.

Simi, who moved to Canada alone for her education, spoke about her initial excitement upon arrival. “When I came to Canada, I was going to school in Hamilton. It was pretty good. I was in boarding school, so it was pretty good,” she said.

However, things took a downturn after a failed business venture and rising housing costs disrupted her plans. “I invested in a business idea that failed. I was running colleges down the street and had a fashion business,” Simi explained.

She also highlighted the housing crisis as a significant barrier. “The main issue is housing. It’s not so much about detox or hospitals or even therapy. Housing is where the real problem lies,” she noted.

Additionally, Simi shared that her struggles with anxiety have made maintaining traditional employment difficult. “I struggle with anxiety, so working a 9-to-5 is quite challenging. I’m trying to figure out what to do and how to find balance,” she said, adding that she is actively working to resolve her housing situation.

Peter, a 25-year-old who arrived in Canada in December 2023 as a student, shared a similar story. Initially supported financially by his father, Peter’s circumstances changed drastically when his father suffered a stroke.

“I came as a student. I was doing well, but then my dad, who was my sponsor, fell sick and had a stroke. They could no longer support me,” Peter explained.

Now homeless, Peter expressed his most urgent need. “What I need the most is shelter. That would help me the most,” he said.

The accounts of Simi and Peter highlight the challenges faced by immigrants in Canada, particularly in navigating housing and financial difficulties while adapting to a new environment.
