From Bariga to Britain: Nigerian man celebrates British citizenship after six-year journey

A Nigerian man has become a sensation on social media after celebrating his newly acquired British citizenship, six years after arriving in the United Kingdom on a work visa.

Sharing the emotional moment on X (formerly Twitter), he posted a photo of his British passport — often called the “blue passport” — and expressed heartfelt gratitude for how far he has come.

“I became a British citizen last month, and two weeks later, my ‘Blue’ passport arrived,” he wrote. “Visiting London was once a childhood dream. I never imagined I’d one day become a citizen of this country I now call home.”

Recalling his younger days when friends jokingly called him “Pappilo of London” or simply “Papa,” he said the names now feel prophetic. “It’s surreal. Back then, those nicknames were just for laughs — now they carry so much meaning.”

He reflected on his humble beginnings, remembering how he landed at Heathrow Airport on January 1, 2019, filled with hope and determination. In six years, he not only gained citizenship but also built a life he considers transformational. “To some, this may just be paperwork,” he noted, “but for a boy from Bariga who dared to dream beyond borders, it means everything. I am truly grateful.”

Though proud of his new identity, he emphasized that he has not forgotten where he comes from. “I still love my Green passport,” he added, paying tribute to his Nigerian heritage.

The post has since gone viral, drawing thousands of reactions and congratulatory messages from fellow Nigerians and members of the diaspora, who praised his journey as a moving testament to resilience, ambition, and success.
