The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to welcoming and reintegrating Nigerians affected by the deportation order issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH, emphasizing the government’s readiness to support returnees.
With approximately 3,690 Nigerians facing deportation as the U.S. intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigrants, the minister assured that efforts are in place to help affected individuals resettle and reconnect with their families.
Tunji-Ojo further revealed that a facility has been secured at Lagos airport to provide psychological support for deportees experiencing mental fatigue and depression.
“It is our duty to manage migration policies and ensure the well-being of Nigerians. We are a responsible government committed to serving the people, and we will not shy away from our obligations,” he stated.
He highlighted a collaborative effort with the British Council that led to the establishment of a reintegration center at Lagos airport, commissioned in December.
“This facility will provide necessary support, ensuring deportees feel welcomed and reassured that Nigeria cares for its citizens. Our approach is founded on humanity and renewed hope,” he added.
The minister reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to Nigerians worldwide, stressing that the administration remains dedicated to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens, both at home and abroad.
