FG expands contactless biometric passport system to U.S., Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil

The Federal Government has announced the expansion of its contactless biometric passport application system to Nigerian embassies in the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

The development marks the second phase of the initiative, according to a statement shared by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The statement, signed by the NIS spokesperson, ACI AS Akinlabi, highlights the agency’s commitment to improving service delivery for Nigerians in the diaspora.

Under the leadership of Comptroller General Kemi Nanna Nandap, the NIS is advancing the rollout of the contactless application platform, which allows applicants to renew their passports without needing to visit a passport office for biometric enrollment.

The service is currently accessible through the NIS Mobile app on the Google Play Store, with an iOS version expected to launch soon.

A more enhanced version of the app for both Android and iOS users is also in development to improve user experience and accessibility.

The contactless passport application system is now operational in several regions, including Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, parts of Europe, and Asia.

However, the rollout has yet to begin in Australia and Nigeria, with dates for these locations to be announced later.

The NIS reaffirmed its dedication to leveraging technology to deliver efficient and accessible services to Nigerians around the world.
