Eni Aluko makes history as first black woman to own football club in Italy

Former England footballer, Eni Aluko, has become the first Black woman to own a football club in Italy. Aluko joins the ownership group, Mercury 13, which is dedicated to investing in women’s football teams in Italy. Their first acquisition is a controlling stake in Italian club Como Women.

Aluko’s move into ownership marks a significant moment for diversity in sports ownership. Since retiring from playing, Aluko has transitioned into football broadcasting, but her passion for the game extends beyond the pitch. By joining Mercury 13, she aims to not only be a successful owner but also an inspiration for Black investors and aspiring owners in general.

Mercury 13 has pledged $100 million towards acquiring women’s football teams in Italy, suggesting a long-term commitment to growing the sport. Como Women represents their first step in achieving this goal.
