Edo Guber: Don’t take sides, diaspora group urges INEC, Police

Members of the Edo diaspora have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and law enforcement agencies to uphold neutrality in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, warning that any failure to address their concerns could erode public trust in the electoral process.

Raymond Osaremen, Deputy Director General of the Diaspora for Asue/Ogie Campaign Council, made this appeal at a press conference held in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. Osaremen, joined by fellow members of the group, urged INEC to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible election, emphasizing that a strong and independent INEC is crucial for a successful democracy.

He also called on the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies to perform their duties with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and respect for the rule of law. Osaremen highlighted the importance of avoiding any actions that could be viewed as intimidation or interference in the democratic rights of voters.

Addressing the people of Edo State, the diaspora group stated: “Your vote is your voice. We encourage you to remain resolute and not be deterred by intimidation or fear. Participate fully in the democratic process, knowing that the future of our state and nation depends on your engagement. Report any instances of voter intimidation or malpractice to the appropriate authorities.”

The group expressed concern about the potential for voter intimidation and the role of law enforcement in the September 21 governorship election. They warned that unresolved issues could undermine the core principles of democracy and erode public trust in the electoral system.

“We unequivocally reject any form of voter intimidation, harassment, or coercion by law enforcement or any other party,” Osaremen asserted. “The role of security agencies is to protect citizens and maintain peace, not to instill fear or manipulate the voting process.”

The diaspora group called on INEC to maintain its commitment to a fair and transparent election process and to ensure that its officers are well-trained and equipped. They stressed the need for prompt investigation of any reported irregularities and accountability for those compromising the electoral process.

In conclusion, the group reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the upcoming election is conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. They urged all stakeholders—law enforcement, INEC, political parties, and civil society—to contribute to preserving the integrity of the democratic process.
