Canada eases post-graduation work permit rules, removes study field restrictions

Canada has revised its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) regulations, eliminating the field-of-study requirement for international students completing college degree programs.

This change, which now applies to both college and university graduates, is intended to streamline the process and increase accessibility within the country’s international education sector.

Previously, the field-of-study restriction, introduced in 2024, applied exclusively to college graduates, while university students remained unaffected. According to The Economic Times, this requirement was part of a broader initiative by the government to strengthen oversight of international education, as noted in a report by ICEF Monitor.

With the recent adjustment, graduates from any Canadian bachelor’s or master’s degree program—regardless of whether they attended a college or university—will now be eligible for the PGWP, provided they fulfill language requirements.

The policy revision is expected to benefit Canadian colleges, which have traditionally drawn significant numbers of international students, particularly in business-related fields.

These institutions are known for equipping graduates with practical skills aligned with the Canadian labor market.

By lifting the field-of-study restriction, the government aims to boost the appeal of Canadian colleges among international students, enhancing their competitiveness in the global education landscape.
