Brothers at war: Nwaneri, Obi-Martin, Adejenughure, Izunwanne battle for Euro U-17 golden boot

Arsenal forwards of Nigerian descent Ethan Nwaneri and Chido Obi-Martin are a goal away from matching Victor Moses’ single tournament tally of three goals at the European U17 Championship.

Former Chelsea star Moses won the Golden Boot at the 2007 European U17 Championship after finding the net for the Young Lions in wins against Netherlands and France.

Obi-Martin inspired Denmark to a 5-3 win on penalties against Czech Republic in a quarterfinal clash at the Ammochostos Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The 16-year-old scored a crucial equalizer in the 82nd minute of the contest to take his tally in the ongoing tournament in Cyprus to two goals and converted a spot kick in the shootout.

As for Nwaneri, he got on the scoresheet in England’s wins against France and Spain.

If England defeat Italy on Thursday evening, Nwaneri and Obi-Martin will face off in the semifinals of the 2024 U17 Euro.

Most of the attention has been focused on the Hale End Academy products but they are not the top-scoring Nigerian players at the 2024 European U17 Championship.

Leading the Golden Boot race is Red Bull Salzburg center forward Oghenetejiri Adejenughure who mustered four goals in four matches before Austria were knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinal stage

Michael Izunwanne netted three times in the group stage and will be aiming to increase his tally on Thursday afternoon when Austria face off with Portugal in a quarterfinal clash.
