Austria announces 2025 Ernst Mach scholarship for international postgraduate, research students

The Republic of Austria is offering the Ernst Mach Scholarship for 2025, aimed at supporting international postgraduate students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in furthering their academic and research careers in Austria.

Managed by OeAD-GmbH, Austria’s agency for education, this scholarship program welcomes applicants from a range of academic disciplines, including:

•Agricultural Sciences

•Social Sciences

•Humanities and Arts

The scholarship is designed for semester or one-year grants, with research grants ranging from one to nine months, offering flexibility for various applicants.

Benefits of the Ernst Mach Scholarship

The scholarship offers several key benefits for successful candidates, including:

•A monthly stipend of €1,300 during their stay in Austria.

•Accommodation assistance, with affordable housing options between €330 and €800 per month.

•Administrative support from OeAD to help with housing arrangements.

•Guidance on obtaining health insurance, with costs ranging from €55 to €200 per month.

•Waiver of tuition fees at public universities in Austria.

•A travel subsidy of up to €1,200 for applicants from eligible developing countries (with travel invoices required for reimbursement).

•Opportunities to network with leading researchers and institutions in Austria, enhancing both academic and professional connections.

Eligibility Criteria

The Ernst Mach Scholarship is open to early-career researchers. To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

•Be a postgraduate student pursuing a PhD outside of Austria, or a postgraduate or postdoctoral researcher wishing to conduct research in Austria.

•Postdocs employed at universities outside of Austria are also eligible.

•Applicants must be 35 years old or younger (born on or after October 1, 1989).

•Applicants must not have lived, studied, or worked in Austria for more than six months prior to applying.

•Proficiency in English or German is required for effective communication during research.
