Aston Villa are reportedly keen on re-signing Nigerian-born midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, currently at Chelsea, during the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
The 21-year-old, born in Austria to Nigerian parents, has been deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea, with the club willing to listen to offers. Chelsea are not considering a loan deal for Chukwuemeka, as they aim to sell him for a fee around £40 million.
Chukwuemeka has not made a Premier League matchday squad this season, and has only made five appearances in total across all competitions, starting just once. This has prompted Chelsea to seek a swift departure for the midfielder.
While Aston Villa are eager to bring Chukwuemeka back, meeting Chelsea’s asking price may prove challenging.
Chukwuemeka made the move to Chelsea from Villa in 2022, after featuring in 16 games for the club, having progressed from their youth ranks to the senior team.
Villa, who have struggled to balance league and UEFA Champions League commitments, are looking to strengthen their squad.
However, they face competition from Celtic, Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town, and possibly Crystal Palace, who could rekindle their interest in the Nigerian midfielder.
