Air Peace begins direct flight to UK

Nigerian carrier Air Peace has revived the direct flight route between Lagos and London, marking a significant moment for the country’s aviation industry. The inaugural flight touched down at London Gatwick to jubilant celebrations, with several high-ranking government officials present to show support.

This relaunch comes after a six-year hiatus on the route for Nigerian carriers. Previously, airlines like Med-View struggled to maintain a presence, leaving British Airways and Virgin Atlantic as the only options for direct flights. Passengers on connecting flights often faced lengthy travel times.

Air Peace’s entry is expected to shake things up. The airline promises not only more competitive fares but also a boost for the Nigerian Naira. Unlike foreign carriers that repatriate their earnings in dollars, Air Peace’s local status means proceeds stay within the country.

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting domestic airlines. He acknowledged potential challenges from foreign competitors but vowed to ensure a level playing field.

Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema highlighted the airline’s extensive experience, including long-haul flights to China and India. He downplayed the complexity of the London route, expressing confidence in Air Peace’s ability to provide a seamless travel experience.

This launch signifies a new chapter for Nigerian aviation, offering travelers a wider choice and potentially more affordable fares. With government backing and a proven track record, Air Peace appears poised to make a lasting impact on the Lagos-London route.
