Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has showered praise on Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman following his recent crowning as the African Player of the Year in Marrakech, Morocco.
Lookman earned the prestigious accolade after an outstanding year for both club and country, beating top contenders such as Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, and Ronwen Williams.
During the 2023/2024 season, Lookman was instrumental in Atalanta’s success, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists. His contributions were pivotal in securing the UEFA Europa League title, including a memorable hat-trick in the final.
For Nigeria, Lookman also shone brightly at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where his three goals helped the Super Eagles secure a runner-up finish behind the hosts.
Continuing his fine form this season, Lookman has already registered 12 goals and 5 assists in 20 appearances across all competitions. His performances have been critical in lifting Atalanta to the top of the Serie A table and keeping them in contention for automatic qualification to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
Speaking to Serie A’s official media channels on Christmas Day, Gasperini lauded Lookman as one of the finest players in Europe and beyond. He highlighted the forward’s growth, adaptability, and improved consistency since joining Atalanta.
“He’s a top player,” Gasperini said via Calciomercato. “In terms of character, there are perhaps players who have more consistency and are more solid, but that’s normal. Even the role itself has its demands.
“He always needs to be very fit, but he has become a truly extraordinary player, among the best in Europe and the world. He has adapted wonderfully and has fully embraced Atalanta’s playing style.”
Gasperini credited Lookman’s improved consistency as a key factor in his rise and expects him to continue delivering at the highest level.
Lookman’s stellar contributions have made him an integral part of Atalanta’s success, and Gasperini will undoubtedly count on his brilliance when the team takes on Lazio this Saturday.
