NIDCOM lauds Nigerians in Diaspora for scholarship support to students

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has commended Nigerians living abroad for their continued support in advancing education through scholarship programs for young Nigerians.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, expressed her appreciation during the launch of a scholarship disbursement program in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The initiative, championed by Zumunta Association USA, aims to assist undergraduate students studying Engineering, Medicine, and Computer Science across Nigerian universities.

Speaking on her behalf, Mr. Abiodun Akanbi, NIDCOM’s Head of Programme Development, emphasized that supporting students is a vital act of volunteerism and a way to give back to society. He highlighted the importance of leveraging education and entrepreneurship to drive sustainable development.

Dabiri-Erewa also noted that the scholarship program aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, particularly in fostering socioeconomic growth and empowering Nigerian youths.

Mr. Sunday Bitrus, President of Zumunta Association USA, explained that the scholarship scheme is rooted in economic empowerment and is free from religious, political, or ethnic bias. As a native of Nasarawa State, he said he felt a personal duty to support his community, awarding ₦60,000 each to 56 students pursuing degrees in key fields.

The event was attended by Mr. Emmanuel Yona, Permanent Secretary of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, alongside past presidents of Zumunta Association USA.

Some scholarship recipients, including Addra Sulieman Ibrahim and Maryam Abdullahi, expressed their gratitude, stating that the financial aid would significantly enhance their academic journey.
