NiDCOM seeks National Assembly’s support for amendment of diaspora act

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called on the National Assembly to support and collaborate on amending the Commission’s governing Act.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Act of 2017 was established to enhance the involvement of Nigerians abroad in national policies, projects, and development initiatives. It aims to harness their human capital and resources to contribute to the country’s socio-economic progress.

NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this appeal during a courtesy visit to Senator Natasha Akpoti, the newly appointed Chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs. During the meeting, she provided an update on the Commission’s activities since its inception, highlighting its engagement with Nigerians abroad and efforts to safeguard their welfare.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed optimism about working with the new committee leadership and extended her gratitude to the previous chairman, Senator Victor Umeh, for his support during their 19-month collaboration. She emphasized NiDCOM’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Senate Committee to enhance the welfare of Nigerians globally.

As part of her presentation, Dabiri-Erewa handed over copies of the National Diaspora Policy, publications detailing the Commission’s past activities, and the 2025 NiDCOM calendar of events.

In response, Senator Akpoti assured the Commission of her committee’s commitment to supporting NiDCOM in fulfilling its mandate. She pledged assistance in three key areas: securing proper funding for NiDCOM’s budget, facilitating the acquisition of a more suitable office space, and ensuring improved welfare for Nigerians living abroad.
