The ONE Campaign, a leading advocate for eradicating extreme poverty and preventable diseases, has appointed Nigerian entrepreneur Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli as its new CEO. Nwuneli takes the reins after a rigorous global search, marking the organization’s 20th anniversary.
Starting April 2nd, 2024, Nwuneli will lead a global team across 10 cities, spearheading campaigns that support African nations in securing financial aid, developing effective policies, and mobilizing activists. The ultimate goal? Eradicating extreme poverty and preventable diseases by 2030.
“I’m committed to leading ONE at this critical time,” declared Nwuneli. “We’ll forge new partnerships, mobilize funding, drive sustainable growth in Africa, and ensure transparency in resource allocation.”
Nwuneli brings over 25 years of experience in international development, focusing on African agriculture, nutrition, and social innovation. She has founded multiple organizations and served on numerous boards, making her a perfect fit for ONE’s leadership needs.
Tom Freston, Board Chair of ONE, praised the appointment: “Ndidi’s passion, expertise, and connections make her ideal for this pivotal moment. With her at the helm, ONE will lead the way in tackling complex poverty issues.”
Founded by Bono in 2004, ONE boasts a remarkable track record. It has secured $72 billion for global health initiatives, including vaccines, and mobilized $97 billion in pandemic recovery funds. Notably, Bono credits ONE with influencing the US PEPFAR AIDS program, saving over 25 million lives.
Financially supported by philanthropists, foundations, and corporate giants like Dangote Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Coca-Cola, ONE is poised for further growth under Nwuneli’s leadership.
Bono expressed his optimism: “Ndidi is the perfect birthday present for ONE. An African leader for an Africa-focused organization – she’s the ideal person to take us forward. She understands the power of collaboration between governments and businesses to solve global challenges.”
