A 32-year-old Nigerian woman, Temitope Iwute, tragically passed away during childbirth in the United Kingdom, leaving behind her newborn son.
Iwute, who recently completed her Master’s degree at York St John University, had been eagerly anticipating her graduation and a bright future. However, her life was cut short during childbirth at Croydon University Hospital in London.
The Community of Nigerians in the UK (NIUK) announced the heartbreaking news on Monday through their official X (formerly Twitter) account, appealing for donations to support her newborn and cover burial expenses.
The statement read, “Dear NIUK Community, we’re reaching out with heavy hearts to support the family of Temitope Elizabeth Soneye Iwute, a vibrant 32-year-old who tragically passed away during childbirth, leaving behind her precious newborn son. Temitope had just completed her MSc at York St John University and was eagerly looking forward to her future. Now, we ask for your help to honour her memory and support her baby’s future.”
So far, £3,785 has been raised out of a £15,000 target, with 157 donations making up 25% of the goal.
Mauren Elor, the organiser of the GoFundMe campaign, described Temitope as a warm, loving, and devoted woman who dreamed of motherhood. In a heartfelt note, she wrote:
“Temitope radiated joy as she prepared to welcome her baby into the world. She was a devoted wife, cherished daughter, beloved sister, and a friend to many. Her untimely passing has left a void that cannot be filled. Little Baby will never experience the tender love, soothing voice, and strength of the woman who cherished him even before his first breath.”
Elor emphasized the importance of supporting Temitope’s son, adding that the donations will not only help with burial arrangements but also provide a stable future for the baby. She urged the public to donate, no matter how small, as a way of honoring Temitope’s memory and ensuring her child receives love and care.
“Your generosity will help provide for the baby’s future, ensuring he has access to education and the opportunity to grow into the wonderful man his mother believed he would become,” she added.
The campaign continues to appeal for support, asking people to donate and share the message, ensuring the baby is surrounded by love and compassion during these challenging times.
