Nigerian Governor commends Fene Osakwe for historic nomination at UK Cyber awards

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has praised Dr. Fene Osakwe, Chairman of the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Board, for making history as the first African to be nominated for the prestigious Cyber Personality of the Year award at the UK Cyber Security Awards.

Established in 2014, the Cyber Security Awards celebrate individuals, teams, and organizations that have made remarkable contributions to the global cybersecurity sector. This independent event, free from ties to any magazines, organizations, or products, ensures that decisions are based purely on merit.

The Cyber Personality of the Year award honors those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, advocacy, and expertise in cybersecurity, recognizing their contributions in advancing the industry, shaping its visibility, and encouraging the growth of others.

Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated Dr. Osakwe, saying, “I am proud of Dr. Fene Osakwe, whose achievements reflect the immense potential of our youth in the tech industry. We in Lagos are immensely proud of him and will continue to inspire our youth to become experts, ensuring Lagos stands as a hub for tech and innovation.”

Dr. Osakwe is the only African nominee in this category, competing alongside renowned leaders from 11 other nations. His leadership, vision, and innovative approach to cybersecurity have earned him widespread recognition over the past decade.

He is a regular contributor to major platforms like Forbes and has become a prominent figure in cybersecurity research and publications. In 2024, he was invited to join the Global Advisory Board for Penetration Testing by the EC-Council, the world’s largest certifying body for information security professionals. He was also inducted into the Forbes Technology Council in 2021.

Osakwe delivered keynote addresses at major cybersecurity conferences in Europe and Africa in 2024, with his talks being highly praised for their depth and educational value.

Additionally, he mentors students at the graduate, master’s, and doctoral levels across universities in the UK, Nigeria, the US, and Canada. His numerous accolades include being named one of the top 20 coaches to watch in 2023 by the New York City Journal and recognized by CIOLOOK as one of the top global cyber leaders under 40 in March 2023.

In 2022, Osakwe was honored as the Cyber Youth Mentor of the Year in Dubai and received the Exceptional Leadership Award at Internet 2.0 in Dubai. He also won a global book award in 2023 for his Amazon best-selling publication. Furthermore, he was recognized as one of the top 100 inspiring personalities of 2022, among many other honors.

In October 2024, under his guidance, Lagos State launched its inaugural cybersecurity awareness month to educate citizens on cybercrime prevention. Osakwe is also collaborating with the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology to introduce further cybersecurity advancements within the state.

This nomination highlights not only Dr. Osakwe’s exceptional talent but also the growing influence of Lagos State and Nigeria on the global stage. Osakwe himself expressed that the recognition transcends racial boundaries, pointing out that the world is increasingly noticing Africa’s achievements.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive such recognition globally, and being the only African nominee in this category is truly inspiring,” Osakwe remarked.

Dr. Osakwe has long believed that Nigeria holds the key to addressing the global tech talent gap effectively.
